Composite Sync Separator Circuit
Sometimes it can be useful to obtain separate syncronization video signals from a composite syncronization video signal. How can we do that?
How you well know, composite syncronization video signal combines horizontal and vertical synchronizations onto one single wire. For example, SCART connector uses composite sync (pin 19). Instead, separate video sync uses two separate wires for horizontal and vertical synchronization signals. For example, VGA uses this type of video sync (pin 13 and pin 14).
If your projector (or monitor) accepts only separate video sync while you have got only composite video sync, e.g. your video signal comes from SCART, you can use the following very simple circuit.
The aim of the circuit is to separate the composite video sync which comes from SCART, in horizontal and vertical signals. In the above figure, the generated horizontal and the vertical video syncronization signals are connected to pin 13 and 14 of VGA connector. Be careful: VGA standard has not the same horizontal and vertical syncronization frequency of SCART (i.e. both PAL and NTSC standard use 15kHz for horizontal sync while VGA uses 31.5kHz minimum) therefore don’t use this circuit if you aren’t sure that your monitor supports SCART syncronization frequency.
The circuit is very simple. It’s based on LM1881 IC, producted by Texas Instruments, and a NAND logic gate 74LS00.
